904L is a superaustenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments. It contains high levels of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, along with copper, which contribute to its superior resistance to chloride and sulfuric acid attack. While it offers excellent corrosion resistance, it’s not as strong as some other stainless steels and can be more challenging to machine.
904L excels in resisting corrosion from various acids, including sulfuric and phosphoric acids, as well as chlorides.
It has a face-centered cubic crystal structure that provides good ductility and weldability.
The high levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper are key to its corrosion resistance.
The low carbon content in 904L (typically less than 0.03%) minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion, especially in welded areas.
Used in equipment for handling various corrosive chemicals, including sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
Found in equipment for controlling air and water pollution.
Its corrosion resistance makes it suitable for heat exchangers in various industrial applications.
Used in equipment for processing pulp and paper, which often involves corrosive substances.
